Institut für Angewandte Informatik

The Institute for Applied Informatics association (InfAI-Institut für Angewandte Informatik e.V.) was founded in 2006 to promote science and research in the areas of Computer Science and Information Systems.

About InfAI

Since 2008 the Institute for Applied Informatics (InfAI) has been a recognised affiliated institute of the University of Leipzig and has since developed into one of the largest research institutes with the most third-party funding at the University of Leipzig. The institute’s more than 160 employees work with renowned participants from science (e.g. ScaDS.AI, German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence, Helmholtz Centres, Fraunhofer Institutes, Leibniz Institutes, Max Planck Institutes), international universities and companies from practice (Siemens, Daimler, BMW, SAP, T-Systems, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, Software AG, ERGO Group, Mercateo) on national and international research and industry projects.

Big Data and Smart Data

The InfAI contributes the expertise of numerous competence centres and associated professorships. This includes both technology and computer science-related topics (AI, Big Data, IoT, sensor connection, semantic data, linked data, language technology, enterprise systems) as well as technical and methodological focal points (structured problem solving, process design). The InfAI also covers a wide range of topics from the application domains: From agriculture, logistics and mobility to energy, smart living, health, smart city, e-commerce and production to higher education / training and knowledge management.

Furthermore, the InfAI regularly organises meetings, workshops, symposia and conferences to strengthen the exchange between excellent researchers and between science and industry. Currently, these events include, for example, the “SEMAN-TiCS”, the “Leipzig Semantic Web Day”, the “AI Hub Saxony” and the workshop series “Big Data and AI in Business”.

The Role of InfAI

InfAI sees its role as transfer institute and innovation driver of solutions based on current ICT technologies. The technologies are developed within national and international research projects or as contract research for various target industries, afterwards brought to product maturity in partnership with companies in order to make them available for use. Such an integrated value chain makes innovations usable for companies and inherent risks manageable. The institute’s strategic goal is to further expand this role. To this end, InfAI Management GmbH was founded in 2015 as wholly owned subsidiary of the Institute for Applied Informatics (InfAI) e.V. InfAI Management GmbH focuses on transfer tasks, economic activities and the association’s administration. As of January 2019 InfAI established a new Cultural Data Science Group that conducts research on cultural data with data science methods.
