SpiritRAG – A Step Forward in Context Sensitive Research

In fields where language is complex and context matters, researchers often struggle to retrieve the right information from large and unwieldy document collections. SpiritRAG, a new lightweight open source tool developed by the URPP Digital Religion(s) of the University of Zurich, offers an elegant solution.

Designed by Fabian Winiger, Yingqiang Gao and their team, the tool brings context‑aware AI search capabilities directly into the hands of scholars, policymakers, and digital humanities practitioners.

Concepts

Traditional keyword searches often return thousands of irrelevant documents. SpiritRAG changes this. By using large language model (LLM) technology to recognize concepts rather than keywords, it filters out misleading results. As Winiger notes, “If you search for ‘spirit’ in the UN dataset, you get many hits that are just false positives… But with SpiritRAG, you can actually search for concepts because the tool uses large language model technology to allow context‑sensitive search.”

Adaptable

Originally created to support research on religion and health in United Nations resolutions, SpiritRAG goes beyond that field. The tool is modular and open source, “so anyone can plug in their own data and use it for their own purpose”, Winiger explains. This makes SpiritRAG highly adaptable – not confined to its original niche, but capable of powering research across diverse domains and functioning as a building block for customised digital research environments.

User Control

A defining feature of SpiritRAG is its lightweight architecture and full user control. Whereas many commercial AI tools run on external servers, SpiritRAG can be installed locally. “It’s all completely transparent, completely in your control, completely flexible and free”, says Winiger. This makes the tool particularly valuable in contexts where data sovereignty is essential.

Intuitive

Using SpiritRAG feels intuitive: “It is basically like a chatbot,” he says. A user enters a question, the system generates an answer, and – most importantly – shows the exact documents used to produce it. This transparency supports evidence‑based inquiry. In this way, SpiritRAG helps researchers and policymakers quickly find relevant sources while still allowing them to check the material themselves.

Step Forward

With its ease of use, flexible setup, and powerful context‑sensitive search, SpiritRAG offers a step forward in exploring large and complex text collections — making research faster, more accurate, and more accessible.
