Piazza Grande Journalism Award Goes to Serena Bilanceri

Serena Bilanceri, a free journalist covering news in among others the Middle East, was awarded the Piazza Grande Journalism Award during EuARe’s General Assembly, held July 8, 2025 at the University of Vienna.

The Award

As Elisa Di Benedetto (International Association of Religion Journalists (IARJ) stated, the aim of the Award is to honor and support the work of journalists working on religion and faith. That the Award was announced during the eighth Annual Conference of the European Academy of Religion (convening July 8-12 at the University of Vienna) is not a coincidence, since there is a connection: many journalists use the work of scholars for their stories.

The Award Winner

We interviewed the award winner Serena Bilanceri, a free journalist based in Amman. She works from Bremen (Germany) and from the Middle-East, where she covered and covers news in e.g. Syria, Jordan, Israel and the West-Bank.

What does the award mean to her personally and for her work as a journalist?
