Fondazione per le scienze religiose

The Foundation for Religious Studies John XXIII (FSCIRE) is a research institute dedicated to the study of the History of Christianity and the History and Doctrines of Islam.

About FSCIRE

FSCIRE was established in 1953 as a documentation centre, and in 1990 it became a Foundation. In 2014 FSCIRE was recognised by the Italian ordinary fund for research institutions as a national research infrastructure of excellence for religious studies and officially mentioned in the National Research Program for the years 2015-2020. As a private foundation, independent of churches and universities, its continuous work is supported by public funds distributed on a competitive basis and private donations.

In 2003 the UNESCO Chair on Religious Pluralism and Peace of the University of Bologna has been entrusted to Giuseppe Alberigo and subsequently to Alberto Melloni, Director of the Foundation since 2007. Researchers, scholars, librarians and school teachers coming from all over the world animate the Foundation, which is organised into two libraries (Giuseppe Dossetti Library in Bologna for the History of Christianity, Theology and Exegesis; and Giorgio La Pira Library in Palermo for the History and Doctrines of Islam); the archives; a college named after Beniamino Andreatta; the Giuseppe Alberigo European Graduate School for Religious Studies; the Editorial Department; the Video History Laboratory.
